If you are considering a new website or an update and are considering a single page website, you might want to reconsider. Even though the single page style is trendy right now, it won’t do you any favors with SEO.

While it is important to keep things current in terms of your site looking modern and beautiful and to leave behind technology that is outdated or clunky, there is always the fashion versus function aspect.

What is a Single Page Website?

A single page website is exactly what it sounds like, a single page that you can scroll from top to bottom. It may have menu items, but those will simply take you to a different area or heading of the page. A multi page website often will have a menu at the top and that menu will navigate to the various pages on the website.

What is SEO?

SEO is what allows users to find your site on Google. Here’s a refresher.

Why a Single Page Website Bad For SEO

Three top reasons:

  1. You can only really optimize the WHOLE WEBSITE for one keyword phrase.
  2. Your page speed may suffer.
  3. It will be tough to strike a balance of how much content is enough for most users without skimping or overloading the other users.

Let’s delve a little further into those reasons. In general it is best to SEO one web page for one keyword phrase. So, if you have only one website page, it is challenging to SEO for more than one, or perhaps a very few, keyword phrases. Not ideal to say the least.

Page speed is important. If a page takes more than 3 seconds or so to load, many users will go elsewhere. On a single page website, one page will contain ALL your content. Perhaps this will include videos, images, text, sliders, accordions, contact forms, etc. All of that content will be loading for every user, every time which can easily translate into a bogged down, slow experience.

As far as content goes, we’ve all experienced where reading the first sentence tell us that we are not interested. Or, perhaps we want more, more more. Or somewhere in between. On a multi page website it is easy to link to another page or pages that can do a deep dive into a subject. The site pages can be developed over time by looking at Google Analytics stats to determine what your users spend time on and want more of or by what type of customer inquiries you receive the most of. With a single page website, it’s a judgement call as to how much or how little on each aspect to provide.
